At the epicenter of the Japan's fate

BECOME A FUKUSHIMA INSIDER

The first Fukushima tour which is not for ordinary tourists. With an in-depth 2 day tour from Tokyo you will become the one who can completely grasp the Fukushima story – by visiting the Dai-ichi Power Plant, meeting local workers and people who returned to live in the disaster area.

Visiting the Fukushima area for more than 1 day (and spending 7 hours on the road) allows you to thoroughly learn about the largest earthquake in Japan’s history, the meltdown of the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant, as well as the heroes who protected it from an even larger disaster of radioactive water polluting the sea, the impact on the surrounding area, and the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people. You will see new buildings, roads, seawalls standing next to the abandoned ghost houses, dusty cars, empty shops, and vending machines. The most important ingredient of the tour are the people – the ones who left, returned and are helping to rebuild the towns of this iconic coast line.

Your tour to Fukushima Power Plant starts in Tokyo – at the Railway Station where we will pick you up in a comfy van. Your knowledgeable English guide will give you all the safety instructions, as well as the necessary background info around the events and places in Fukushima prefecture you visit. Besides taking care of you, translating, and walking you through the most epic parts of the Fukushima zone, your guide will lend you a Geiger-Mueller Counter (Dosimeter) to make sure you are at the safe side in terms of your radiation safety.
Let’s uncover the story of Fukushima, the area around Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, which was hit by the enormous – over 40 meter high – tsunami, and then later by the radioactive aftermath which caused the flooding of all 6 reactors of the power plant. The explosion that followed created a second “Chernobyl” on this planet in which houses and cars were left abandoned, alongside the contaminated animals and soil.

The story has a silver lining, however. The Fukushima destiny serves as a role model today on how to cope with a nuclear disaster. On the first day of the tour when you visit the Dai-ichi Power Plant you will learn more about the reasons of the meltdown, safety measurements after the explosion, as well as the future of the power plant, which has another 30 years of decommissioning ahead of itself. Also you will learn about the unique but ineffective system freezing the soil and underground water which is around the power plant.
On the second day, you will explore the coast line with the iconic places such as the flooded school at the shore, the almost abandoned cities of Iwaki, Futaba, Tomioka and others, as well as the also decommissioned Dai-ni nuclear power plant (from a distance). Take a walk in the strangest places, such as the train station which became a terminus for trains from Fukushima, the gorgeous sakura alley now empty, or a farm with contaminated bulls who are still living thanks to donations of food leftovers. You will witness contaminated soil being removed and people slowly coming back to their houses. With the Fukushima tour by ChernobylX you are supporting the local communities – we dine and stay in small family owned restaurants and hotels.

Compared to the Chernobyl area and the liquidation of the largest nuclear energy disaster in the history of mankind back in 1986, Fukushima is a different story. First, the volume of contamination is about 20% of Chernobyl, with less long half-life particles spread in the zone. Second, the precise Japanese plan and dedication of how to clean the area inch by inch, turns the Fukushima area into a very advanced and modern area ready to be inhabited again.
Your Fukushima Power Plant tour is only for people of 20 years or older, with a limited programme due to works at the Dai-ichi Power Plant- mostly outside premises. Filming and taking pictures at the Dai-ichi Power Plant is very limited. We will fully cover your safety (dosimeters – Geiger-Mueller counters), permits, transportation, interpreting from the locals, and accommodation with dinner and breakfast. The minimum number of participants is 8 in the group. We will let you know if your chosen date does not meet the minimum requirements at least 2 weeks in advance.

We have been on a mission to CHALLENGE YOUR WORLDVIEW since 2008.

You are all covered for the Trip of your lifetime
